Customer reviews

How customer reviews and ratings work

We use the Average with Prior (also known as Bayesian Average) to calculate the total rating for each fleet operator/charter company.

Since new companies could have very few reviews, each review can significantly impact the average score, potentially leading to misleading representations of the total score (e.g., one very positive or very negative review skewing the overall rating). To mitigate this, we use a "prior" or "default" score.

This means that each company rating, by default, starts 4, which is calculated from 3 hypothetical reviews, each rated 4. This assumption provides a baseline level of performance that is neutral-to-positive.

For example, if a new company receives a 5-star review, the total rating will be adjusted to 4.25. Here's how it is calculated: (4 × 3) + 5 = 17 and then divided by the total number of reviews 4 (3 default + 1 actual review), resulting in 4.25

As more reviews come in, the weight of the actual reviews increases, and the influence of the prior diminishes.

Neel 43 trimaran
“Everything went flawlessly”
Everything was very well handled by 12 knots with communications with the local company in BVI taking place flawlessly. We had a great charter and would certainly recommend 12 knots for anyone considering a charter.

Sardinial / Neel 43
“Bad start and it declined from there...”
We had the Neel 43 Trimaran 'Sardinia' chartered for 2 weeks incl. a local skipper - in total we paid a little over EUR 20k for these two weeks (I just put this here so you have a reference about the quality you should expect). It was off to a bad start. No good communication about where to find the office in the marina - on a Saturday when everything (literally) was happening - offboarding, onboarding, cleaning, farewells, welcome backs... let's say it was busy like an ant hill but way more chaotic (ants do have a nice structure behind their movement). When we finally found the office, there was not a lot of explanation. The only thing they cared about was our credit cards (I understand that this is a for profit organization, but please keep in mind that you are providing a SERVICE. So at least pretend please that you care). We got the keys to the boat and were again on our own. Very narrow pier and the cleaning crews (it was 1:45pm) were STILL there and blocking the pier with cleaning utensils, dirty laundry, etc. so it was difficult to navigate. When we arrived at our boat, the skipper had already taken the bow cabin (which we wanted to give to the kid) and was nowhere to be seen. When he finally arrived (3:30pm - we had booked an early checkin which is 1pm at this marina) he explained he went for a coffee and met friends (it's the first day on a two week job and you decide to hang... well, we were on vacation so we let it slide). Beside that, the boat was not very well maintained/cleaned. We sent pictures to the owner who texted back immediately to let the charter company know - nothing ever happened - nobody did come to clean, no discount for the inconvenience. The skipper then told us that we are leaving now, because it will be a mess in about 30 mins because then the non-early-checkins would try to leave. No plan/route discussion, no briefing, etc. When we arrived in the first marina, he told us that we would stay here and he would discuss the plan in the evening or next morning; that never happened. Cutting it short here: 2 weeks with a skipper who saw his job as a bus driver with a smartphone glued to his hand. I had written to him in advance that I wanted to learn more about the boat and sailing a tri in specific, learn more about the Adriatic coast and waters and planing with the special wind conditions there (Mistral, Bora, etc.), about docking a tri in the harbor... NOTHING happend. He told us the third day that we have to pay him an additional EUR 40 per day for food and on the last day of the charter he told us that we should pay him in cash for the two weeks (I rarely carry EUR 3k on me) and got mad when I told him that I can wire it to him and only agreed if I put "vacation" as a reference (you can take from that what you want, but I have my idea why that is...) This is a 2* review because I liked the tri in itself. Organization, setup, execution, etc. get no stars at all and I would never book here again and especially never ever again with a skipper.
Response from the owner
“ Details provided by the skipper”
Dear Alexander, It is very sad that the charter didn't meet your expectations. The total price of the charter was 12,000 Eu, not 20K. Below is the response from the skipper. “First of all I’m realy shocked and suprised with your mail, this is a first claim on my work from the guests in my whole career as a skipper. I always doing my job with a lot of care and professionalisam for the popele on board. It is also so suprising because they didn't say a word, and I always pointing to the clients that I asking for fer and open communication. As with all other guests I like to have a feedback from them during the week if we can do something diferent like longer swims stops, more or less navigation, locations and places to visit etc. So I also asked them many times during 2 weeks are they pleased with the tempo and ways how we spending days, and they are realy pleased and happy about locations we visit. All the things gentelman Alexander Marten says are notoriuos lays. I see that they begging for discount, but in a very dirty way, they pretending they are nice but in the core they are realy shallow people. But I will start from the begging. On Saturday as usual, I come to marina at 1pm and boat was already ready so I do the tehnical Check In with charter staff, and prepared the boat for the guests. They was late and in stress so I meet them and try to relax them ap they dont need to spend frist day like that. Boat was cleaned and well prepared from the charter company, also well maintanined for charter boat all of that I explained to the guests. They have early check in but they was late, and then they started with packing all their belogines and grocheries on board, I help them to put all the things on board and they continued with packing all things. After I ask several times is there is a way I can help them they said No, so I use that time to have a coffe because we cannot go on the sea with things all around boat. After I came back I do the quick brefing and explain them how to behave on board, things to take care of and plan for that day because I think first day in Marina on Šolta will be good for them so they can acomodate on life on board. Next day they said they are sound sensitive despite night in Marina was realy quite and calm. So in the morning I repeat brifing again and we discuss about route plan, that we will go in way of Dubrovnik (because they didn't be there and they want to visit old town) and during the way we will visit beautiful nature locations like island Vis, Blue cave on Bisevo island, Nature park Lastovo, island Mrcara and National park Mljet on the way to Dubrovnik. They agreed about everything and we decide to spend most of the nights on bouys far away from city noise. Every other day before dinner and in the morning we discuss about where we are going and what we can expect acording the weather forecast. I take extra care to start earlyer every day when sea is calmer because his wife Ana is in the fourth month of pregnancy and does not tolerate the sea well. So in 14 days we been in just 4 marinas, other days and nights we spent in beautiful bays and I take care of transport to the shore for the dinners and night walks, I was available 0-24 every day for them. We sailed every day whenever we had a positive wind, I talked a lot about sailing, weather conditions in Croatia, winds, micro climas etc. On a sailing days I give Alexander the helm and talk and explain why we are doing some things during the sailing and we done a lot of manuvers with mine assistance. I am very surprised and disappointed with his review, because I know they had two amazing weeks in Croatia. After all, we had nice goodbye, so I can see that the purpose of slandering me and the charter is only to get a refund. Apologize for a long mail but I just want to tell the truth.
