For bareboat charter in Italy - Sardinia, a valid sailing license is required: IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) issued by ASA, US Sailing, NauticEd, RYA, IYT, or another certified school. “Cagliari Charter boats are not maintained properly and not safe”

We were one of three crews participating from 17th to 23rd May 2025 in the Engineering Challenge Cup on yachts chartered from Cagliari Sailing Charter. All three boats had very old UV weakened sails and all three suffered tears. We were all charged hundreds of euros for sail repairs that would not have been necessary if the sails were in a fit condition. Avoid this charter company! Their approach to maintenance is to do nothing and charge repairs to whoever is chartering it when it fails. We had numerous other problems which show they do not check the boats between charters. For example, the VHF and instruments had corroded wiring so they did not work. The in-mast furling system was jamming even under no load (i.e. with the sail removed). Their technicians tried hitting it with a hammer. We eventually got it adjusted carefully by someone else and it worked fine after that. My friend with whom i was sailing has chartered every year since 1999 and not before seen such poor maintenance. The boats are not safe and there is a high probability you will face extra charges for failures that are not your fault.
