Customer reviews

How customer reviews and ratings work

We use the Average with Prior (also known as Bayesian Average) to calculate the total rating for each fleet operator/charter company.

Since new companies could have very few reviews, each review can significantly impact the average score, potentially leading to misleading representations of the total score (e.g., one very positive or very negative review skewing the overall rating). To mitigate this, we use a "prior" or "default" score.

This means that each company rating, by default, starts 4, which is calculated from 3 hypothetical reviews, each rated 4. This assumption provides a baseline level of performance that is neutral-to-positive.

For example, if a new company receives a 5-star review, the total rating will be adjusted to 4.25. Here's how it is calculated: (4 × 3) + 5 = 17 and then divided by the total number of reviews 4 (3 default + 1 actual review), resulting in 4.25

As more reviews come in, the weight of the actual reviews increases, and the influence of the prior diminishes.

“Sea Alliance. Not recommended at all.”
⭐☆☆☆☆ I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience with Sea Alliance was disappointing enough that I feel obligated to share it so others can make an informed decision. We signed our charter contract almost a year in advance and prepaid the entire amount, expecting the level of service that a luxury yacht charter should provide. Instead, communication from Sea Alliance was almost nonexistent until about two weeks before our departure. One of the biggest reasons we chose this charter was because we were promised a professional cook. Without any prior communication, the cook was removed from our charter and replaced with a very young hostess who had little to no kitchen experience. As a result, our family spent much of the trip preparing our own meals or helping in the kitchen—something we certainly did not pay for. Our preference sheet was also ignored. We specifically requested that there be no pork onboard, yet pork was stocked on the boat anyway. It was clear that our requests had not been properly followed. To be fair, the captain and hostess worked hard and remained professional throughout the week. They did the best they could with the circumstances they were given, and my disappointment is with Sea Alliance’s management and planning—not the crew. The yacht, NYD AMOUR II, also had several maintenance issues. The generator repeatedly failed and needed to be reset, the sound system barely worked, leaving us without music for much of the charter, bathroom door handles were loose and falling off, and toilet seats were loose. These are issues that should have been resolved before guests boarded. To make matters worse, it has now been over a week since our charter ended, and I am still waiting for the return of my security deposit with little communication regarding when it will be refunded. When you pay a premium price for a luxury yacht charter, you expect professionalism, communication, and for the company to deliver what was promised. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. I strongly recommend that anyone considering Sea Alliance compare other charter companies before booking. Ask detailed questions about crew assignments, vessel maintenance, and communication. I wish we had.
