Portugal Yacht charters

The name of these islands originates from the Portuguese "azul" which literally translates as "blue". Sailboat charter in Azores is getting popular among sailors due to the preservation of pristine nature and development of eco-tourism. Christopher Columbus visited Azores during his trip to America. However, it is known that Vikings and Arab sailors were the first who discovered this place.

“We tried to make the most of it, but it was far from ideal”

Hey Grigory, thanks for asking. The boat was not in good condition. For example, there were no mooring, deck or motoring lights, so we feared a boat would hit us while we slept, and were not complying with the law while sailing at night. The anchor w…

Yachting in Portugal

Sailing in the Atlantic Ocean could be a life dream for many  people. However, if you are an experienced sailor yacht charter in  Portugal can offer you numerous options for offshore and coastal  passages.

Portugal is known a country of explorers and pioneers since ancient  times. And even now, centuries later, it remains popular destination for  all kind of water sports. So, there is no surprise that Portugal  considered to be one of the best yacht charter destinations. This  country can boast endless and beautiful coast, number of most beautiful  beaches, modern infrastructure and unique architecture.

Why Portugal?

This country attracts with its rich cultural and historical  heritage, excellent hotels, first-class service, low crime rate, warm  climate, and a wide variety of leisure activities. And on top of that,  while on your sailing vacation you can also get acquainted with the  great variety of local wines, as well as the rich traditions of  Portuguese cuisine famous for its meat and seafood. Currently Portugal  is not invaded with tourists and is chosen by travelers who want to see  something new and unusual after Italy, Spain or France.

Sailing in Portugal

Sailing in Portugal

Portugal has subtropical, Mediterranean climate. During the  winter, air temperature rarely drops below + 5 C, while in summer it  keeps between +25-27C. The average annual precipitation is 400-800 mm.   During the summer Portuguese Trade Winds known as Nortada blow in the  afternoon at up to force 6 knots from midday till 7pm in the evening.   This is the right time for sailing south in the afternoon. However, if  you sail north, you have to make an early start and be in the next port  till noon. Expect light south-easterly winds during the mornings. Going  north be aware of the traditional advice to head out into the Atlantic  to search for better winds as many sailors that followed this advice  came back Northern Portuguese ports to recuperate after meeting adverse  weather and swell. The northerly wind also causes down drafts behind the  capes. The wind usually increases at river mouths as the wind is sucked  up the valley as the sea breeze, so you should be prepared for the  considerable wind increase when approaching a port.

Weather forecast

It is rather difficult to find weather forecast in Portugal in  English. The best service is provided on Navtex from Monsanto radio at  Lisbon (Group II) and also forecasts transmitted at 0250, 0650, 1050,  1450, 1850, and 2250. Use channel 11 and 20 to receive weather forecast  in English via VHF. Also, you can get weather forecast in English  transmitted on 2657 KHz by naval radio station. During your yacht  charter in Portugal read forecast carefully making a note of the swell  which, in Portugal can be more danger than winds. The swell can be  caused by a storm far away in the Atlantic Ocean and not accompanied by  local winds.

Tides and currents

Tides and currents

The North-West point of Galicia causes the gulf stream to split  giving a 1/2 knot southerly drift along the Portuguese coast. The  surface of the sea moved by the prevailing winds usually is more  noticeable than the actual current. Tidal streams are quite weak,  setting north on the flood and south on the ebb.

During summer when the Portuguese trade winds blow, expect a  southerly current of up to one knot, while during the winter expect a  northerly flow caused by the wind from the south. The tidal stream is  important in certain of the river entrances, where there is a bar, and  if there is a swell.  In these conditions, it is best to enter shortly  before high water to avoid conflict of the tidal stream with wind and  swell. Approach these harbors with caution in these conditions which  usually occur in the winter months.

This European country is famous for its magnificent climate  (especially on the south coast), picturesque bays, hospitable ports and  white beaches. You can sail on a yacht in Portugal all year round,  without waiting for a favorable season, as in other countries.

Most of the marinas and harbors in Portugal on the west coast are  located in the river mouths, protecting yachts from virtually permanent  Atlantic winds. However, entering some harbors can be difficult due to  weather conditions, so you need to be especially careful and follow the  forecast.

Places to see

Yachting in Portugal covers the entire coast, and you can make a  variety of routes, because each place has its own characteristics,  distinctive features and places of interest. Southern region has secure  and comfortable marinas and moderate climate that allows sailing all  year-round. Largest marinas in Portugal are based in Lisbon, Porto (the  west coast) and Vilamoura (Algarve – the southern coast). The two main  cities of Portugal: Porto and Lisbon, are located on the west coast of  the country, slightly higher than the rivers Douro and Tagus  respectively. All harbors are very comfortable and equipped with all  necessary amenities.

Saling to Lisbon

Lisbon is not only the capital and center of boat rentals and  yacht charter in Portugal, but also one of the most visited cities in  Europe with long history and great culture. A total of 6 marinas are  located here, however there are often not enough berths for mooring, so  it’s best to book a place in advance. There is a small yacht base in  Cascais not far from Lisbon, where you can sail and relax in cozy cafes  and restaurants, having moored your yacht in the local harbor.

Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, is famous for its  winemaking. There you can find Douro yacht charter base and marina  equipped with 300 berths for boats. Entry to the port can be difficult  due to winds, so you need to be careful.

One more attractive area for yacht charter in Portugal is the  Algarve. It is the most southern region of Portugal, on both sides  washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Sunny warm weather makes the coast  attractive to tourists and yachtsmen throughout the year. And the  developed infrastructure and the availability of specialized ports will  make your travel on the yacht carefree. The southern coast is extremely  attractive because of its friendly nature, interesting grottoes and  caves, picturesque beaches framed by rocks and cliffs. Yacht charter  gives you a great opportunity to find something definitely worth seeing  there.

If you want to travel on a yacht along the southern coast of  Portugal, then it is worth to get acquainted with the main cities of  this region, their features and sights. Faro is the capital of the  province, an international airport and a beautiful resort. The city has a  rich history, decorated with ancient buildings, narrow cobblestone  streets. Here there is something to see, and above all, it’s  attractions.

Albufeira is a historical city, living in a modern rhythm. A  large marina is a feature of this city. Spacious parking for yachts,  restaurants, bars and shopping arcades along the pier. It is worth to  visit the Zoomarine – a zoo with marine animals and architectural  landmarks. There is a yacht school where you can get training.

Renting yachts in Portugal provides a wonderful opportunity for those  who want to learn this sport. It will be a great holiday with your  family or friends. You can plan an exciting sea voyage along the western  or southern coasts with visits to picturesque bays, comfortable ports,  clean beaches and world-known attractions.
