Lanzarote is the easternmost, and one of the most stunning of the Spanish Canary Islands. A picturesque, rocky terrain, sunny skies, and pleasant temperatures year-round make this island a popular place for sailing excursions. By day you can explore the volcanic landscape and bustling inner streets, and at night let the waves rock you to sleep.
Unlike the islands in the Carribean and Mediterranean, the Canary Islands are a rare gem for dedicated sailors. They provide favorable sailing conditions for beginners close to the shore, and more challenging seas the further you venture out for the experienced skipper. Accommodations for sailors are also affordable and plentiful in Lanzarote. 12 Knots offers a variety of charter options to make your Canary Islands vacation truly memorable.
Sailing Conditions in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is known for its year-round favorable sailing conditions. The Gulf Stream brings warm waters, and there is very little rainfall throughout the year. While the weather is beautiful, the strong winds can give beginner sailors some trouble the further they venture out into open water. The strong and fast trade winds may also fluctuate, sometimes in the span of a few hundred meters.
There are two mooring/marina locations in Lanzarote:
- Puerto Calero
- Marina Rubicon
These mooring locations book quickly, so be sure to book in advance to ensure you have a place to stay. You will need to be vigilant as you reach Lanzarote, as the waterways can become congested during the sailing season.
Best Time to Vacation in Lanzarote
Like much of the Canary Islands, the best time to visit is in spring and fall. The summer offers beautiful weather, but this can be overshadowed by the influx of tourists and the corresponding increase in prices. Rainfall is heaviest from December to March; therefore, April, May, and September are the best times to plan your sailing charter in Lanzarote.
Sailing Difficulty Level
Lanzarote is a beautiful island to visit, but it can pose challenges to inexperienced sailors. The strong, unpredictable winds can make it difficult to fully enjoy your experience if you do not feel confident with your skills. While the strong trade winds can make for a faster journey from island to island, it is best to have a crewed yacht charter if you are not comfortable with a bareboat.
If you believe you are ready to take on the challenge, consider enrolling in the 12 Knots sailing school. We offer courses for skippers of every experience level. Whether this is your first big sailing challenge or you’d like a refresher course, 12 Knots can help make your Lanzarote sailing experience that much better.
